Though the letter was read in the House of Representatives on the
same day as in the Senate, the House, however, did not consider the
letter. It is now expected that the House would formally consider the
request today. Speaking ahead of the consideration, members were
diverse in their reaction to the extension.
Emergency rule is an aberration – Rep Ogene
Said Hon. Victor Ogene, House Deputy Spokesman and Member representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency, Anambra State: “Speaking for myself as Hon. Ogene representing the people of Ogbaru who have kith and kin that have been victims of the parlous security situations in some parts of the country and who have also been dislocated from their previous abode where they eked out a living, contributed to that particular society and generally domiciled, it should worry any body.
The security situation has not quite returned to normal. And so, the request by Mr. President, I should think is in order because nobody will beat his chest and say the situation is under control.
“However, I think that we should not be enamored with the extension of state of emergency. A State of emergency is what it is. It is an aberration. We should rather work towards finding a lasting solution to the insecurity issues because when you have a suspension of some democratic structures, it is also insecurity in its own way.
So, the earlier we think out of the box, I mean insecurity can also be addressed through political solutions which was what we saw in the Niger-Delta. ”It was a novel political decision that brought about the relative peace in the Niger-Delta. I am glad that a week ago, the committee on Disturbances in the North submitted its report. I think that the president and the executive ought to take far-reaching decisions to ensure that while we are it, extending the life span of the state of emergency, we are able to bring every part of the country under one roof.
We’ll give Jonathan necessary support –Okechukwu
Also speaking, Deputy Chairman House Committee on Ethics and Privileges, Toby Okechukwu, PDP, representing Aninri/Oji Federal constituency, Enugu state said: “We will give the president all the necessary support to enable our security agencies accomplish the work they are doing in those three states. The extension is a welcome development.”
No Comment yet— Mohammed
However, Spokesman of the House, Rep Zakari Lafia Mohammed said: “I cannot make any comment on that issue until it is brought to the floor of the House and it must be well introduced.”
President is in order— Rep Abia
To Hon. Dan Abia, who represents Esit-Eket/Ibeno and Onna Federal Constituency, Akwa Ibom State, the president’s request is in order. ”You know that at the very first instance members gave their massive support to the issue of emergency rule because the issue of Boko Haram is one that needed a drastic action.
Legislative matter
So, we were happy for once that the President decided to do that which was right. So, apparently, from the reports he was getting, it is obvious a lot still needs to be done. And I want to believe also that before Mr. President took that decision he must have been briefed by the Minister of Defence and the Service Chiefs. So, I believe it is more of a security than a legislative matter even though there are principles of check and balances.
“We will definitely need to know why it is so. But the very obvious belief is that from reports the Boko Haram insurgency is still on and I believe that for the President to have taken this decision, he must have been briefed by the service chiefs. It is well within his purview to do that and I believe he did it for the collective good of our people because Section 14 of the constitution said that duty of government is to guarantee welfare and security of the citizens. So, he is in order and I support it.”
It is necessary— Rep Okwu
On his part, Hon. Samson Okwu, member representing Oju/Obi Federal Constituency, Benue State, responded: “The Deputy speaker read the request by Mr. President to extend the emergency rule in the states where it was declared.
In my own view, I think it is necessary because the country is passing through a lot of insecurity right now. And the laws allow him to request for that where within the period of the emergency rule peace has not returned to the place.
