Nascar, Looking for Tech Update, Invites HP Into Its Pit Crew
Even more than your typical professional sports league, Nascar’s
official roster of corporate sponsorships reads like a no-brainer:
motor oils like Mobil 1, auto manufacturers including General Motors (GM) and Ford (F), and Bank of America (BAC),
whose global headquarters in Charlotte is near the sport’s gleaming new
hall of fame. On Monday, however, Nascar announced a new partner that
doesn’t seem quite a fit for racing fans: Hewlett-Packard (HPQ).
A New Push to Sell the World's Biggest Jet
The world’s largest passenger plane can intimidate an airline
executive, with a retail price north of $400 million and as many as 700
seats across two decks—a huge capital outlay in an industry well-known
for turning such investments into red ink. That’s one reason sales have
been sluggish for the Airbus A380 superjumbo.

The Chemical That Hurt U.S. Pork Exports
The largest pork producer in the U.S., Smithfield Foods (SFD), announced a 63 percent plunge
in net income for its most recent quarter, the result of China and
Russia banning U.S. pork earlier this year. The weak earnings, coming
on the heels of Smithfield agreeing to be bought by China’s Shuanghui,
marked a surprising turn of events. Isn’t China supposed to be hog
heaven for big U.S. pork suppliers?
Rich Chinese Provinces 'Outsource' Pollution to Poor Ones
A flurry of citizen-led protests against polluting (or proposed)
chemical factories in Chinese cities has recently made headlines. And
for good reason, as hundreds of peaceful marchers parading in front of
government buildings and waving hand-made signs (such as “We Want to
Survive” and “Say No to PX,” a hazardous chemical) isn’t something you
see every day in authoritarian China.

Using Social Media to Stop Online Payment Fraud
Users of Facebook (FB), Pinterest, and Twitter share personal details every day. Now credit bureaus and payment companies Equifax (EFX), EBay’s (EBAY) PayPal, WePay, and Intuit (INTU)
have begun trials to see whether social posts can help prove identities
or detect whether customers are lying about their finances.
The Most Important, Least Sexy, Debate in Financial Reform
If there were a sexiness spectrum for financial reform (I know, but
bear with me), on one end you’d have the Consumer Financial Protection
Bureau and its easy-to-grasp mission
to watch out for the interests of Main Street. On the other end of the
spectrum, you’d have derivatives regulation, the utterly confusing and
hugely important task of monitoring the $700 trillion market.

Apple Flatters Microsoft With Imitation
Apple (AAPL) paid Microsoft (MSFT)
something of a compliment on Monday when it unveiled iOS 7, the latest
iteration of its mobile device operating system–which looks an awful
lot like the software that runs on Windows Phone. That may sound like
sacrilege to Apple’s true believers, but the evidence speaks for
itself. The crisp, clean lines on iOS 7 apps and the overall
simplification of its imagery and other elements speaks directly to the
designs Microsoft has moved toward for the past couple of years.

Comcast (CMCSA) and its cable partners have revealed that the company already has the largest Wi-Fi hotspot in the U.S., but the cable provider has plans to make that Wi-Fi network far bigger.
